Abstract Rotary drums can show different granular flow regimes each one with its own specific flow behavior, which increase the complexity in their study. The way particles move inside the rotary drum is directly related to the mass and energy transfer rates, and consequently to the process performance. Thus, an experimental investigation regarding the transition between different flow regimes inside a rotary drum was carried out in the present work. To the best of our knowledge, the hysteresis phenomenon was observed for the first time in the transition between cataracting-centrifuging regimes, which was shown to be dependent on the physical properties of the particles such as sphericity, density and particle-wall friction coefficient. A new expression for the centrifuging critical rotation speed was proposed in this work.

Abstract The macadamia tree is known for producing fruit high in fats, enclosed in very hard woody shells. Macadamia nut shell, considered as a by-product from macadamia nut processing, may be a suitable option for pyrolysis. These residues are constituted of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and extractives. The Independent Parallel Reaction (IPR) Model has been applied in this work to study the pyrolysis of macadamia nut shell from thermogravimetric experiments. The kinetic parameters and mass fraction of each component were estimated using the Differential Evolution Algorithm. The influence of the model parameters was also analyzed by means of sensitivity studies. The results showed that the decomposition of the macadamia nut shell is more sensitive to the parameters related to the decomposition of lignin. The results of sensitivity analysis also showed that the activation energy affects the total biomass conversion more strongly than the other parameters and the contribution of extractives in the IPR model is as important as the hemicellulose.

Helical flow in an annular space occurs during oil drilling operations. The correct prediction of flow of drilling fluid in an annular space between the wellbore wall and the drill pipe is essential to determine the variation in fluid pressure within the wellbore. This paper presents experimental and CFD simulation results of the pressure drop in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids through a concentric annular section and another section with fixed eccentricity (E = 0.75), using aqueous solutions of two distinct polymers (Xanthan Gum and Carboxymethylcellulose). The hydrodynamic behavior in this annular system was analyzed based on the experimental and CFD results, providing important information such as the formation of zones with preferential flows and stagnation regions.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the drying process on the vitamin C levels and physical properties of dedo-de-moça pepper. The drying kinetics and the structural properties were determined as a function of moisture content. Convective drying was compared with freeze-drying in terms of product quality, structural properties, retention of vitamin C and rehydration characteristics. Empirical and semi-empirical equations were used to describe the drying and rehydration kinetics. Nonlinear analysis applied to results of convective drying, based on curvature measures and bias measures, showed that the only equation that gives good inference results based on least squares estimators is the Overhults equation. The characterization of the rehydration process was done by determining the indexes that take into account the water absorption capacity and solutes losses. The material dried by lyophilization show greater potential to rehydrate.

This study analyzed the influence of the following parameters: overall volumetric heat transfer coefficient, coefficient of heat loss, drying rate, specific heat of the solid and specific heat of dry air on the prediction of a model for the fertilizer drying in rotary dryers. The method of parametric sensitivity using an experimental design was employed in this study. All parameters studied significantly affected the responses of the drying model. In general, the model showed greater sensitivity to the parameters drying rate and overall volumetric heat transfer coefficient.

Filtering hydrocyclone is a device that was developed and patented by the Particulate System Research Group at the Federal University of Uberlandia. This equipment consists of a hydrocyclone whose conical section is replaced by a conical filtering wall. Thus, during the operation of these devices, besides the underflow and overflow streams, there is another stream of liquid, resulting from the filtrate produced in the porous cone. In the present work, the influence of some geometric variables of a filtering hydrocyclone was analyzed by an experimental and CFD study. The geometric variables analyzed were underflow orifice diameter (D U) and vortex finder length (ℓ). Data from a conventional hydrocyclone of the same configuration were also obtained. The results indicated that the performance of hydrocyclones is significantly influenced by the conical filtering wall. The incorporation of the filtering medium decreased the Euler numbers and increased the total efficiency of the hydrocyclones. Depending on the specific functions of the separator (as a classifier or concentrator) the best values of D U and ℓ were also found for the filtering hydrocyclone.

The purpose of this work was to analyze the hydrodynamic and drying aspects of a rotary dryer used in a fertilizer industry. A set of equations to predict the solids holdup in the flights, the length of fall, the residence time of particles and the drying variables was evaluated by comparison to experimental measurements performed in an industrial rotary dryer of the Copebras Fertilizer Company, located in Catalão, state of Goias, Center-west of Brazil. Because of precise estimations, these equations may be used to design and predict the solids cascading behavior in industrial rotary dryers. Despite larger deviations, reaching 20%, the drying model can also be used for design calculations and process simulations.

Spouted beds, originally invented in Canada by Mathur and Gishler (1955) as an alternative to fluidized beds for handling coarse particles, are now widely studied in a variety of physical operations, such as drying, coating and granulation. In this work the particle velocity, minimum spouting flow rate and characteristic fluid-dynamic curves of the spouted bed were obtained using a Eulerian granular multiphase model. The computational work was significantly reduced for axisymmetric gas-solid flows. The experimental data obtained in two spouted bed configurations, conical-cylindrical and two-dimensional, were compared with the simulated results, showing good agreement

Fluid flow in annular spaces has received a lot of attention from oil industries, both in drilling operations and in petroleum artificial rising. In this work, through numerical simulation using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique, the flow of non-Newtonian fluids through the annuli formed by two tubes in concentric and eccentric arrangements of a horizontal system has been investigated. The study analyzes the effects of viscosity, eccentricity, flow and shaft rotation on the tangential and axial velocity profiles and on the hydrodynamic losses. It evaluates the performance of the numerical method used, comparing the results obtained with those in other reported works, aiming to validate the simulation strategy by the interpolation routines as well as the couplings algorithms adopted.

The purpose of this work was to study the performance of a rotary dryer in relation to number of flights. In this work an equationing was proposed to calculate the area used by the solids in two-segment flights of with any angle between the segments. From this area, the flight holdup and the length of fall of the particles were calculated for different angle positions and the results obtained were compared to experimental values. The results show an increase in dryer efficiency with the increase in number of flights up to a limit value, for ideal operational conditions. The experimental data on average residence time were compared to results obtained by calculations using equations proposed in the literature. The equation proposed for predicting flight holdup and length of fall of particles generated very accurate estimations.

The aim of this work was to analyze the heat and mass transfer between the air and soybean seeds in a concurrent moving bed dryer with an air profile that is not flat. The modelling of heat and mass transfer in moving bed dryers is generally based on the application of mass and energy balance equations for both solid and fluid phases (two-phase model). In the establishment of these equations some classical hypotheses such as that the fluid velocity profile is flat, are assumed. The main goal of this work was to verify the validity of this assumption by means of an experimental and simulation study in a concurrent moving bed, using soybean seeds as particles. In this work, the radial air profile was taken into account by means of a suitable empirical correlation and a mechanistic model validated by experimental results. The numerical solution of the one-dimension boundary value problem was obtained by means of a computational code based on axial integration through the DASSL code. By comparison of the experimental data and the simulated responses for air temperature and seed moisture content, it was possible to verify the significant effect of air velocity distribution.

The spouted bed has been used in drying, granulation, catalytic polymerization, residue treatment and coating of several materials. Its success is attributed to its solids circulation characteristics and excellent gas-particle contact. In this work the pattern of solids and gas flows in a spouted bed was numerically simulated using a Eulerian multiphase model. The computational work was significantly reduced for axisymmetric gas-solids flows. The simulated velocity and voidage profiles were compared with results obtained in our laboratory (with a two-dimensional spouted bed using soybean seed) and by He et al. (1994) (with a cylindrical spouted bed and glass sphere). The simulated results showed good agreement with the experimental data for both geometries studied.

Determination of the size distribution of solid particles is fundamental for analysis of the performance several pieces of equipment used for solid-fluid separation. The main objective of this work is to compare the results obtained with two traditional methods for determination of the size grade distribution of powdery solids: the gamma-ray attenuation technique (GRAT) and the LADEQ test tube technique. The effect of draining the suspension in the two techniques used was also analyzed. The GRAT can supply the particle size distribution of solids through the monitoring of solid concentration in experiments on batch settling of diluted suspensions. The results show that use of the peristaltic pump in the GRAT and the LADEQ methods produced a significant difference between the values obtained for the parameters of the particle size model.

The filtering hydrocyclone is a solid-liquid separation device patented by the Chemical Engineering Department at the Federal University of Uberlândia, which consists of a hydrocyclone whose conical section was replaced by a conical filtering wall. The objective of this work is to compare the performances of the filtering hydrocyclones designed by Bradley and by Rietema. The experimental results obtained with the filtering hydrocyclones under the same operational conditions as those used with the conventional device allow the conclusion that performance of the Bradley and Rietema types is significantly influenced by the filtering medium. Rietema's filtering hydrocyclones had a lower volumetric feed flowrate than the conventional device and Bradley's filtering hydrocyclones showed increases in this same variable. In both designs, overall efficiency was influenced by the underflow-to-throughput ratio.

In previous work, it was observed that the covering of soybean seeds with bacteria and micronutrients enhances vigorous growth of the plant thereby avoiding use of ammoniacal fertilizers. In the spouted bed covering can be done by pulverization of the coater slurry on the soybean seeds using a pneumatic atomizer. The optimum thickness of the cover allows the fundamental gaseous interchanges for germination and provides the ideal conditions for bacterium activity. The objective of this work was to study the influence of the process variables on thickness of the cover. A simulation of the mass distribution of seeds was obtained using a population balance model. Through the results obtained the operational conditions under which the coating layer distribution were determined has the greatest uniformity.
